Edgar Allan Poe and Alfred Hitchcock both use suspense and fear in their pieces of work. The audience can see the way Edgar Allan Poe uses suspense in his pieces, â€Å"The Raven† and in â€Å"The Fall of the House of Usher,† and how Alfred Hitchcock uses similar techniques in his piece, Rear Window. These three pieces of work show how Edgar Allan Poe and Alfred Hitchcock are able to use and set up different aspects to create suspense and fear throughout their stories. In both Hitchcock’s and Poe’s pieces one can see the aspects that they use to create suspense are very similar. Both Hitchcock and Poe use a single character’s point of view, detailed settings, and isolation to create this sense of suspense throughout the story. In all three pieces, the creators use a single person’s narrative and point of view to tell the story. When watching Rear Window, one only gets to see out of the apartment window of the main character L.B. Jefferies, played by James Stewart. (Hitchcock, Rear Window) Having this limited point of view only lets the viewer to a certain distance, which leaves room for questioning. That in turn creates more suspense. Not all the facts can not be discovered when trying to figure out if there was actually a murder like Jefferies suspects. As the approach shallower water though, they slow down and reach much greater heights. With waves upwards of 20 feet crashing onto the shore, thousands of people were swept out to see with the initial waves. Studies show that the west coast is by no means safe from a tsunami of its own. The author does not tell us everything about the characters, the setting, and why the characters behave the way they do. The novel is written in a series of letters, not dated. There are large gaps between some letters, but this is not revealed by the author; we have to figure it out ourselves. The letters are written in what Walker calls black folk language, which also reduces the easiness of the reading. When the novel opens, Celie is a young black girl living in Georgia in the early years of the twentieth century. She in an uneducated girl, and writes her letters in common language.
